Be polite to the principal -- but I don't think he/she should be your friend necessarily. He/She has to administer and run the school and should, ideally, remain neutral in regards to individual students.

Are you a teacher or student? Listen to what others, who know him or her well, say. That will give you several clues as to the principal's interests. Volunteer to work in the office--proximity usually improves relations. Try to appear only in a positive light when you catch the principal's attention. Study, ask questions, pay attention. Being a good student is the best way to impress adults, and it helps you get ahead in the long run.
