Truck: 2000 F-150
This just started recently, and after a short while, my battery went dead. I got a new battery, but the problem persists. When the truck starts, the speedo races all the way up, along with the tachometer. Then they come back down to zero after a couple of seconds.

I've had two similar things happen. One time the throttle position sensor was bad. The other time an air flow sensor connection came unplugged. First I'd look to see if all wires are plugged in tight. Its easy and cheap to start there.

My fiancee's Pontiac Grand Am does this whenever the key is turned on. All the gauges max out, then drop back to 0, then read correctly. It might be normal, but any dealer or repair shop could probably confirm it.

Hmm, does this happen only when cranking or when you turn the ignition to the "on" position without turning it far enough to crank?

I've see this in some models but this is "normal" when you first turn the key far enough to make everything work but not to the far crank position.

Maybe you fixed it! LOL!!!

Good Luck!

I'll bet the dashboard voltage regulator is going bad. I'm sure the Ford trucks still have them, but check with your dealer.....
