Have had a mental health problem since the age of 14 - been on various treatments and had CBT and some therapy when hospitalised. Have had 2 referral appointments for psychotherapy - both times they decided I was not ready or strong enough to have some sessions. Why is this so?

How do you feel about sharing your feelings with someone? A therapist can be easier than a family member because they are impartial, and won't blame you or say something didn't happen. But it does require a level of trust and camaradarie with the person. I have seen three different people. One man, a psychatrist, who prescribles my meds, and two Clinical Social Workers, females, who specialize in Post Traumatic Stress treatment. I have done well with them, and learned much. Did you like either of these therapists? Can you see getting into conversations with them? If so , call back the one you felt most comfortable with and ask for an appointment. Ask her why she doesn't think you are ready, and tell her what you feel about it. If you need support, need to "let it out", need to know you are not losing it, therapy is a good tool.

If you didn't really like either of these therapists, call your local community mental health access line and ask for a referral. You will talk confidentially to someone who is a professional, and they can refer you to a person with the right background and specialty to work with you.

Perhaps you feel as though the process will take away your will and your selfworth. However if you have pscyhotherapist who know their stuff he or she will make you feel at ease an help you to understand and find out what is worrying you.

My advice if you want to start living your life to the full that you need to start trusting people. However, for this to happen you must tell this person how you feel so that you work together without feeling intimitated. Remember this person does not know you from Adam and therefore you must build some repoire with him or her through trust and understanding.

I can't imagine why anyone would say that to you. I am sorry that this has happened, and I hope that you will be able to receive the treatment you are seeking as soon as you possibly can. Usually it is the exact opposite. I applaud your strength and perseverance, and the courage it takes to survive. Your life will only get better, and great things will come to you - you will be a strong-minded and very capable individual - you're already half way there. Good luck to you.

I'm not sure, but psychotherapy can involve self disclosure and having to be open with the psychologist or therapist. That's the only issue I see with it. I hope you get better.

You must go there with a POSITIVE attitude. Look forward to what ever they will test you upon. Ask questions and try to answer their's as directly and openly as possible.
Therapy only works if you want it to.
