In particular, I want the router to support:

* gigabit ethernet,

* 802.11n,

* be easily configurable so I can route ports to services running on multiple machines connected to it, and,

* I'd like to be able to potentially run an alternate OS (ie be able to flash the router to run a "hacked" OS that's more configurable than what the device ships with out of the box).

Bonus points if it can turn a Firewire/USB 2.0 harddrive into a NAS device!!

Thanks for the tips!!

I have always been a fan of Buffalo Routers. Highly stable and easy to use, they just seem to work, I don't know if DD-WRT works with this one but works with most buffalos.

This one is gigbit and 802.11n it also includes 5 gig 802.11a so you aren't stuck on 2.4!
Sorry no 2.0 usb Nas but use a Buffalo ethernet NAS!
