From reading a lot of the misspellings and lack of punctuation on this site (I just read a post that contained the word "imbarress," for God's sake), isn't it clear that not enough Americans know enough about English to actually claim it as our official national language?

John: Please prove what is or is not important to me. Also, please prove that an official national language will "unify" the nation. What drivel.

It is a frivolous notion. The French tried it and it didn't work over there, either.

And you are correct; many Americans speak and write at only a 6th grade level, but that is party due to the quality of their reading material; they do not as a rule read great literature which would increase their vocabularies. Most newstand print is dumbed-down and does not challenge readers.

I think anyone proposing the "official language" idea ought to be able to pass the English portion of an SAT test.

Hmmm, sorry, I guess I always thought that it was your official language. Isn't everything on your packaging and on signs in English? Aren't all your laws and your constitution written in English? But, I guess I just assumed that it was since we have official languag(es) here in Canada - English and French. The way it works here is that all packaging, etc. must be in both English and French. You can request either language for anything that falls under federal jurisdiction. And immigrants must demonstrate at least a working knowledge of one of them. That doesn't mean that they can't speak their native language at home but official things must be done in one of the two. I don't see why you couldn't make English your official language in the same way. Or maybe English and Spanish since you have waited so long lol. And, since you say that most English speakers are almost illiterate, the immigrants wouldn't have too much to learn to be able to function as well as the native born.

Once Bush is out of office and the new breed of republicans take over from all those "RETIRING" - language improvements will increase as the mangling of the language from the right will desist as the newbies will be forced to be more articulate in order to try and compete with the better spoken Democrats........

(Another fine example of how Hilary will save us from the clutches of that thar devil..)

The walls of restaurant restrooms should be plastered with placards in every language known to man.

I'd hate to think of an employee who is deprived of understating this message in English:

Please Wash Hands Before Returning To Work.

If you mean of the United Sates, then my answer is, we must! It has been our language since this nation was created. But it would have to be an amendment to the Constitution, other wise it may be tossed out.
Anyone who doesn't like can either live with or move.

You're making a conclusion that the US shouldn't have English based on a post with some spelling errors? You're trying to be funny right? You silly girl. Now go put some clothes on or get some implants.

So what language would you choose? Just because someone mis spells some words shouldn't mean that english shouldn't be our national language. It would save so much money in a lot of places like education. But I see your point and it shows me how little regard some have for spelling and puncuation and they have spell check!!!

We are facing a threat from all of the Hispanic immigrants, many of whom are not learning English, and in many areas, they don't need to learn English. There are too many Spanish TV and radio stations, and many public school classes are taught in Spanish. If we don't make English the national language of the US govt, we may end up like Canada with two areas of the country with different cultures and languages.

We need a common language to unite our country. We have 37 million immigrants in our country right now and we need to assimilate the legal ones and deport the illegal ones. The Dimocrats favor legalizing the illegal aliens and not assimilating them.

I'm sorry , but I have a problem with attempting to take your question seriously when you have posted a picture of yourself in a bikini top for all the world to see, have you no decency ?

Maybe in addition to more English classes in schools, we should consider adding proper etiquette to the roster as well.
