Change the fifths to tenths. 4/10 and 6/10. Remember to double the tops and the bottoms. Pick 5/10 because it is in the middle. You can also use 1/2.

For the eighths, notice that it is 5 and 7. In between those two is is 6/8. To simplify, divided by a common factor (2). 3/4 will also work.

Ok. The answer for A is 2.5/5 or 1/2. The answer for B is 6/8 or 3/4. The difference between the numerators in problem A is 1. 1/2 of 1 is 1/2 or 0.5. 2 and a half is one half of 5. The difference between the numerators in problem B is 2. 1/2 of 2 is 1. So you add 1 to 5 and it is 6. That makes the numerator 6 and the demoninator 8. 6/8 is equal to 3/4. Hope this helps.

You simply average the two fractions.
Add them and divide by 2.
So 2/5 + 3/5 = 5/5 = 1
Answer is 1/2.
Similarly, the second one is 12/16 = 3/4
