Walk and have sex. Some people swear by spicy foods. Good luck, and either way, you'll be a mommy by next weekend! Congratulations!

just because the doc thinks the baby is big doesn't really mean anything unless he thinks the size of the baby proposes a problem for you and/or the baby. in that case, induction is probably the safest way to go. considering you have already began the process of dialation, the process should go rather quickly and smoothly. but i will warn you, don't expect a pain free delivery just because it's induced. it's purpose is to throw your body into labor. sometimes this causes a bit of back labor. but no worries if you choose an epidural...they will usually tell you that you can have one once dialated to 3cm...but take it from experience..the farther you can get without one, do so. sometimes a epidural can slow down the process...
good luck with your baby and congrats!

I usually trust my doctors if they feel it is best for me and the baby. If you are dialated already even the one centimeter plenty of walking will help to dialate you even more. Are there any other concerns such as gestational diabetes that could cause your doctor to be concerned? Or are you just small framed where he think it is best for you to have the baby now? Please keep in mind that during the last month or so a baby gains themost weight and very rapidly. 38 weeks is not full term but it is far from premature thats why they say give or take two weeks. If you are dead set on letting the baby decide talk to your doctor and express your feelings and beliefs. This way you both will know the advantages and disadvantages as well as each others feeelings.

What do you want? An induction or a membrane sweep? Those are two different things but it seems like you think they're the same. Doctors can't induce you for no medical reason on a first pregnancy prior to 39 weeks. A bad pregnancy isn't a medical reason.

Im getting induced Tuesday at 38 weeks 5days. Im also 1cm dilated and thinning. My dr gave me the choice to induce and I chose yes. Ive been 1cm for the last 4 weeks and have tried walking, sex, spicy food, pineapple, everything I heard of, I tried...but Im still only 1cm. No worries, you'll be fine. Just take these last few days to relax and get some rest, you'll be needing your energy :) Good luck to you and congrats!

I am soooo jealous. My dr won't induce until 39 weeks...and that falls on a friday so he is making me wait again until the following Monday. They already think she is over 8 pounds and this will put her at almost 10 by induction date. Anyways, to answer your question, with my first pregnancy I stalled out due to exhaustion....so I would split my time between house work & walking and resting/napping. That way movement can speed it along, but you body is super smart and it won't let labor begin if you are too tired to be ready for it.

Decline the induction. Just don't show up. You don't sound convinced that it's necessary; if you're not, just don't do it.
If he can't show you ultrasound measurements of your pelvis and the baby that prove it is getting too big, or if he can't show you clear evidence -- signs that indicate fetal stress, placenta not doing its job, not enough amniotic fluid, or some other kind of metabolic problem that's causing the baby to be unusually big, or any other medical reasoning that he can convince you *necessitates* early induction, it's probably just crap -- he wants you to give birth at his convenience. 38 weeks is early for most first pregnancies. You're not going to go into labor on your own -- probably not till 40 weeks. 40 to 42 weeks is normal for a first pregnancy.

the choice is ALWAYS yours. If you don't want to be induced say so. they can only advise you their opinions and strongly recommend what they want, but it's always your choice. I wouldn't have it done personally. You can't be measuring too terribley big, or they would do a c-section... two of my friends measured "big" both were told their babies looked to be 9 pounds+ and they had scheduled c-sections because of it, and the babies were both only 7 pounds and a few ounces! Average, certainley not big... Just remember, if you don't feel right about it, go with your instincts. Good luck

Other than walking a lot and having sex there is really nothing else that is safe to bring on labor.

You have the right to deny any medical procedures that you don't wish done. Just because your doctor wants it, doesn't mean it has to happen. You have the right to say no!
