Another question...I've narrowed down the fish I want to several different species-3 to 4 zebra danios, small schools of 4 to 6 cherry barbs, neons, silver dollars, and bleeding hearts,a corydoras catfish, and a couple of pearl gourami.Sound like a compatible group? The danios, cherry barbs, and tetras grow to be no bigger than 2 inches, the silver dollars can get up to 6,cories are no bigger than 2 1/2 generally, and pearl gourami are around 5.Would a 45 gallon tank be reasonable for these fish?

its getting kind of thick in there -- i have pearl gourami -- nice fish. corys are shoaling fish -- most catfish are -- if you want catfish get a group of at least 5. i would get bleeding hearts or silver dollars but not both in a shoal of maybe 6 -- they are very similar in habit -- bleeding hearts can be nippers. then pump up your shoals of cherry barbs and danios -- 7 barbs, 9 danios. i think i am getting close to max.

more of the same fish usually makes for a more cohesive and aesthetic tank.

no for that amount of fish you want at least 90gallon tank if not more even a 120gallon tank that way there is the growing and swimming room for all of the fish you want esp. the silver dollars reaching 5 -8inch they are a very active fish and are ideally kept in shoals of 6+.

They may look a big scary fish but even when fully grown and mature they are fine with medium sized fish like ur barbs and gouramis but i would not trust them with anything smaller.

Because the dollers are an active fish they are going to wan a huge water flow which requires a large filter usually external to push that amount of water. therefore you must make sure the tank is at least 2ft deep so that the other fish can hide and get out of the way of the main current that the larger fish are going to love swimming in.

In theory, yes, but in reality, no. The Gouramis will fight each other, and a school of Silver Dollars is very active and would likely injure itself in a 45 gallon tank. I would get a 75 gallon tank, and add a few more fish (definitely 3-4 more Cories because they are shoalers). If you didn't get the Silver Dollars and only got one Gourami, you could pull it off in a 30 gallon... I would also suggest you get 3 more Danios (regardless of tank size).

as long as your fish do not get hungry.... they will get along fine
you will have a fairly non agressive tank, however the barbs are a semi-aggressive breed of fish...
if they get hungry they may chase the smaller ones like the zebras and neons.
