Joined the Navy in '65 (was going to join the USAF but the recruiter was out on an appointment. I just wanted to get out of Delaware). Was on 5 ships, 8 oceans/seas, 6 continents (which included a 13 month tour in Antarctica...because I WANTED to, that's why), in 32 countries, some more than once (stationed in 3). I've been as far east as Pakistan, as far west as Thailand, as far north as Nova Scotia, and as far south as Antarctica (made a trip to the South Pole station and had the most southern fried chicken in the world).
And, YES, I'd do it ALL again.
Father was US Army WW2; step dad was USAF, wife is a Navy brat, youngest son is a DAV (USN medically discharged).
(USN, retired/in-country Viet Nam vet)

I'm a military brat married to a military brat. :O))
Our dad's were career military men.........Air Force.
His dad retired at 20 and mine at 30yrs.
We grew up on military bases. There are some mighty special memories that will be with me as long as I'm on this earth.
My favorite is still the time when my mom drove to the base to pick up my dad from work (we lived off base in Biloxi, Miss in the mid 50's). At 5 o'clock sharp every single uniformed individual stopped in place, turned on their heels, snapped and held salute to Old Glory while it was being lowered for the evening. My dad was one of them and I remember being so proud.
Best wishes to your ex.

I haven't, but my uncle served in the military (I forget which war). He got malaria and had life long scars from it. When he died at age 72, they had a 21 gun salute and I received a flag as his next of kin.
