You can write the book in whatever order comes to you. If you have a really good idea for an ending, start there and go back to the beginning later. As long as it all fits together in the end, you can start wherever you want.

As far as publishing, your first step (once you have a completed, revised manuscript) would be to query agents. Miss Snark's now-defunct blog will tell you pretty much everything you need to know about that, and it's hilarious to boot.

This is also my dilemma. My professor once told me exactly what to do, and I'll pass that along to you. There are many different things that publishing companies want. You have to find out what genre your manuscript lies within first. Then do some research about publishing companies that deal with your genre the most. Look up their submission guidelines (usually they don't want your entire manuscript but just an synopsis and two or three chapters). You may have to get an agent, but with help and perseverances you can seriously do this on your own.

Oh and first things first. You actually have to write a manuscript. Don't think about the complicated stuff. Write your novel first then all that stuff above will be a walk in the park compared to the creativity process of beginning and finishing a novel. Once you've finished you'll be more dedicated than ever to get it published. There's no need to think about publishing until after you're finished writing!

Happy writing!

There’s no easy way to write a novel
No fast or best way… it’s what works for you. Some write longhand in notebooks or on notepads, others use word processors. Some can write a novel in weeks, while it takes years for some people.

The best way, start by writing and reading—a lot, anything you can get your hands on. Write stories and then rewrite them, just to see if you can improve them. Work hard in your English classes. Go to college and major in English if this appeals to you. Read the classics and Write tons of papers. When you are ready to write a novel, make sure you go through several drafts, submit your short stories and poetry to literary magazines. Find an agent to represent you. Do not pay to have yourself published, and do not post your work on the internet for everyone to read. I’ve heard that publishers are having issues with newbie writers who have posted their novels online. They will drop you like a bad habit. Good luck!

I suppose the first thing you should do is find an idea, something you can think about a while without getting bored.

After that, you sit down and start writing it out, if after a while you don't get bored, continue with that idea. If you find yourself bored, however, start thinking of a new idea. No good book was ever made at the author's displeasure.

You don't specify what kind of book you would like to write (fiction or non-fiction) but regardless of what you want to write I would recommend the book "Is There a book inside you?" by Dan Poynter. He takes you step by step in how to go about writing your first book. Good Luck to you!

im writing one now, so here is what i did
1) get a note book, decide who the charictars are, whos the villan/hero, get down a brief summary of what you want to happen.
2) expand on your brief summary, make it more detailed
3) start writing, but keep the note book, to put down new ideas or thoughts
