Single Crochet Vs Double Crochet

Check the site below for step by step instructions on how to crochet. It will give you illustrations on how to make the various stitches.

For each crochet stitch you yarn over and pull through a different number of loops. Double crochet has one more loop than single; triple crochet works off one more loop than double. The half double has the same number of loops as the triple but how they are worked off changes the stitch. It's easier to study illustrations that show how the stitches are formed than to try to explain it with words only.

Next time you are at your favorite yarn store, you might look for a basic How to Crochet booklet that has good drawings. Make that the anchor of your crochet book collection. You'll find yourself referring to it even when you've crocheted for years because you want to check a detail or an abbreviation when you start a new pattern.

Besides the difference of individual stitch height, fabric created with solid single crochet stitches will be warmer than a fabric created with solid double crochet stitches. The reason is because the double crochet has space (like a slit) between each stitch that allows more air through.

If you're interested which fabric would be quicker to make, most would say a solid fabric of double crochet stitches as it takes one row of doubles to match that of two rows of singles.

To see how each stitch is created, visit the website www.anniesattic.com as they have video footage you can watch on your PC for free.

I hope this helps,

Hard one to explain. The yarn is wrapped around the needle and worked off one time then it leaves 2 pieces of yarn on the needle to be worked off again. It makes a stich that has a twisted piece of yarn in it and its taller than a single crochet.

A single crochetyou just incert the hook in a stitch and draw up and and then draw up the darw and pull through 2 loops on hook but with a double crochet you will wrap the yarn 1 time around the hook (yo), and then incert it into a stitch. You will then draw up a loop and pull threw and then yo pull through 2 loops on hook and the yo and drop through next 2 loops on hook. You then should have one loop left on hook to do your next stitch.
