Two things before directly answering the question: 1) There are some doctors who question whether cholesterol is a problem at all. In the modern scientific community we have a lot of problem with "cascades", where a few scientists generate a cogent rationally, reasonable study that either confirms what people already believe, or just makes a lot of sense, and other scientists who've not studied it accept it and give it weight, and then it's "common knowlege" and is almost impossible to dislodge. Cholesterol leading to cardiovascular disease MAY be this. 2) A big part of cholesterol levels is genetic. You may be about as low as you can naturally go. That said, from what I understand in doing a lot of reading on this subject: 1) Lose body fat. Lifting weights *and* mild cardio workouts. 2) Avoid "starches". As you are vegetarian this is going to be more difficult, but skip the pastas breads and potatoes (in your case you might want to eat just the potato skins if there is stuff in there you need. If you're not a vegetarian for religious or moral purposes, I'd suggest adding a bit of fish into your diet (tuna and salmon) this will help you get a better protein/carb/fat balance. I'm not going to get into whether a vegetarian diet is "healthier" than one that includes meat, but it certainly isn't better in regards to cholesterol. My attitude is that how well you live is more important than how long, and cholesterol just isn't worth worrying about. If I get my numbers lower by doing stuff I think is necessary anyway, great. If not, well you gotta die from something.

The only "natural" way is through a low cholesterol diet, however, I must caution you that diet alone may not rid you of 'bad' cholesterol altogether since the body also manufactures cholesterol, diet notwithstanding. I would highly recommend a change in medication combined with a low cholesterol diet. If that works, you may not need to have a high dosage of any available medication. I take Simvastatin, the generic of Zocor, and have no muscular or joint problems even though I am totally disabled with a back injury which effects my muscles and joints! Your doctor can give you a printed copy of the diet for high cholesterol or you may get it on-line at the URL listed below. Good luck!

Sorry about your pain, glad to hear your looking at nixing the lipitor....
I will echo a previous answer about the insulin/cholesterol effects, and in my personal experience, lowering sugar and simple carbohydrate intake lowered my triglycerides! Fish oil is helpful for many things, including the cardiovascular system and the inflammatory response.
Ground flaxseed meal in water, cereals and baked goods is also helpful to give those much needed healthy fats, the omega's. Garlic helps also.
And of course, daily exercise and purified water!

sometimes it is just a genetic thing we cannot control. I quit
Lipitor and am now on Vytorin and it works on good and bad cholesterol. Check with your Dr. about another med. that would help and explain this about Lipitor, it isn't unusual, you may have to try 2 or 3 to get the right one for your body. Good luck and eat right and exercise, no salt.

best way is to bring down your insulin levels ( I know, cholesterol and not diabetes but the insulin works on both) and the best way to do this is to cut out carbohydrates, especially the white ones. Cut out white sugar, white flour, potatoes, white rice, and eat lean meats, lots of vegetables ( fruit only between meals, wait 2 hours on both sides) and your insulin will drop as will your cholesterol ( disclaimer - i am not a doctor and this is not health advice yada yada yada - but you can check this out from real doctors)

It's probably not doing your pocket book any good either. They say oatmeal is good for that. But, I wouldn't stop the drug and substitute oalmeal for it but suppliment it with oatmeal and see how that works.
