I liked both, but can't really get away with Tom Cruise. Independence Day is far better on so many levels, i never get sick of watching it, and Will Smith has some brilliant one liners!!

Bam, Welcome to Earth!!

Oh no you did not shoot that green **** at me!!

Independence Day!

War of the Worlds had great cinematography but so did Independence Day. But Independence day had great characters played by Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and the guy who played Rusty the pilot who was abducted by aliens. I was more worldly rather than War of the Worlds which just seemed to focus on Tom Cruise' family and wherever they lived. Plus War of the Worlds didn't seem to develop as nicely as Independence Day. It was like BOOM aliens are here and now dead.

No. War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise was a remake of the original movie. It had a better plot...and it is made to be darker and more serious with more suspense.
Independance Day (even though I love the fim) was an imitation of War of the Worlds. It appealed to the audiance by being more light-hearted, special effects and Will Smith who was at the height of popularity.
You forgot..."Now thats what I call a close encounter!"

Between the two films ... Independance Day, Will Smith and Jeff Goldbloom just work so well together.

However, if you are including every version of War of the Worlds then Jeff Wayne's musical version is sheer genius. I was watching my copy of the live tour last night. Of course Phil Linot is a miss as Parson Nathanial.

Independence Day is far superior to the new version of War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise just does not do it for me), but, if you compared it to the old version with Gene Barry then I would have to pick War of the Worlds!

I'm rather keen on Jeff Goldblum myself - did you see him in Earthgirls are Easy? Cor, lol:-D

sorry but war of the worlds was better the 1st time round this new version is worth watching but only the once whereas Independence Day has a bit more comic relief and doesn't take itself to seriously
