For a minute or so almost every day my Focus gives a cough and the speedo stops working. The engine continues to run as normal and then the speedo starts again. What causes this. I have a colleague who experiences the same thing with her Focus.

It could be as simple as a ropey throttle switch on the accelerator pedal (If it´s a diesel). Cheap to repair and a job you could take on yourself if you are a fairly confident DIYer. Without more details it´s impossible to diagose the fault. The Focus has an ECU (it´s a computerised engine management system) which records fault codes which can be plugged into the diagnostic equipment at your local Ford garage. The mechanics should be able to tell immediately where the problem lies - do expect to pay at least 60 quid for this though. However, if you´ve disconnected the battery for any reason, they wont be able to read anything.
I´d like to know if it´s a petrol model (I suspect not) - if it is a diesel, is it a TDdi or TDCi, because the engines are very different. Seriously, I´m no mechanic but feel free to email me, because I do know a bit about the Ford Focus.

I do believe that the speed sensor at the back of the ignition switch, on the back of the barrel the connectors can melt and become loose and cause this problem . If it isn't this check the speed sensor which is on the back of the gearbox. This sensor should register as a fault code but sometimes doesn't hence the engine cut out. Once changed you shouldn't have a problem.Good luck - hope this helps.

Hi

Sounds like the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) may be having a tantrum or two!

Its located on the gearbox.

Best regards
