I need to replace the spring shackles and the 4 bolts on a ford ranger 96'. I bought the shackles and brackets, but still need the bolts. The dealership sells the bolts for 75.00 but can't I use other types of bolts that would work just as well and be cheaper? What types recommended? Any advice ? thanks

head to a tractor supply store. they sell grade 8 by the pound. most of my el camino hardware came from there....
my $ would buy a strong bolt even if its not a high stress area, but i like my suspension to keep me suspended..so grade 8 for me!

No way. You need to use the same grade of bolts that came on your truck originally. The cheap bolts from your hardware store will shear off or break under load. If those bolts fail it could cause the axle to come out from under your truck and cause a serious accident. Find out the exact size and grade of the bolts and you can probably find them for a lot less than what the dealer charges, but use the right ones. Not just any bolt will do.

...$75.00?! It sounds like some "nut" tried to "screw" you. LOL!!!

You should be using a grade five bolt. It may call for a grade eight bolt but a grade five is adequate unless you are taking it off road or doing some towing. (Grade 5's have a gold-iradite finish and grade 8 is almost always flat black in color.)

Most auto part stores like PepBoys have little bins full of bolts of all sizes and are typically grade 5 and grade 8 only. They have to as many bolts break off when working on cars and trucks and have to be replaced. Also, many hardware stores have even smaller bins full of specialty bolts like grade 5 and 8 and stainless and so on.

Good Luck!

You will find that the bolts recommended are not just any old bolt
They are high tensile steel
Ordinary bolts are not

use bolts recommmended. a lower grade bolt could break. bolts are graded or strength and lesser bolt is not safe.
