Laughter can be a response to stress. It is also a defense mechanism. In an uncomfortable situation, (funeral, awkward social situation...), it can be used to lighten tension. Not always appropriate, (funeral), but effective. If the person is someone you barely know, it could be that they are feeling tense just talking to you, laughter helps calm their nerves. Most accomplished liars do not have "tells", such as laughing or cutting their eyes.

I'm quite giggly at the best of times. My wife has this thing where, if she doesn't think I'm being serious when I say something, she tells me to look at her and say that, and claims to be able to tell if I'm lying by whether or not I giggle, or smile. However, I can tell in all honesty that even when I'm not lying, the thought of trying hard to convince her of what I'm saying (and the face she makes when she's watching me so intently) always make me laugh.
Although it has to be said, I really can't lie for toffee. I'm sooo lousy at it :-)

I use LOL in an answer if I am saying something that could be offensive if taken the wrong way. I use it to show I am joking and not being serious.
The only other time I use it is when I am laughing.

Not necessarily, they could just be nervous, some people laugh when nervous even if the question is not funny as bazaar as it sounds it's true, so i'd put it more down to nervouness or just not knowing the answer to give.

It can be that the question is humorous to them, they are embarrassed, stressed, laughing to keep from crying or being angry, or their thoughts are elsewhere and they are thinking of one thing while listening to you speak about something else. Our minds are capable of working on several tasks at one time, and we're not always listening or concentrating on the one person who is trying to have a conversation with us.

It could. It could also mean that they think your question is childish, stupid etc. It could mean they will answer honestly but be embarrassed by the answer. it could mean they are just nervous about you asking a further question they dont want to answer.
