The UK is 6 hours AHEAD of Eastern US time, so 8 pm in New York, for instance, would be 2 a.m. in the UK. Most telephone directories list the countries and how many hours behind and/or ahead of the US they are, and the list is in the front of the book as part of the information pages.
You can make your own time line by drawing a line going across a sheet of paper (graph paper is good for this). Put 24 lines up and down along this first line, mark one side west and the other east. Then, number each side from zero (the middle line) to 180 by 15's (15,30,45---180) because time zones change every 15 degrees longitude. The zero is the Prime Meridian that runs through Greenwich, England and the 180 is the International Date Line. If you know the longitude readings of each location (for instance, if the longitude is 73 degrees east, put a mark on the 75 degree line because it's closer to 75 than it is to 60), you can figure out the correct time. Going EAST you GAIN and HOUR/DAY; going WEST, you LOSE an HOUR/DAY.
Another example is my friend in Australia is 16 hours ahead of my location in Iowa. So, since it is 3:45 pm here on Saturday, it is 7:45 a.m. on Sunday there.
