Hi,
This is a new one, no disrespect meant.
I'll assume you realize that Granite is a composition of minerals that equates to a type of "stone"
Painting in the sense of a Granite look; perhaps even a spatter paint look is certainly available; BUT Formica is not at all condusive to positive results in any manner of coating.
Beyond that if this is a surface that comes in contact with food products; it shouldn't be painted anyway.
Then and finally, and again with all due respect and not knowing at all the specific TOP in question; most counter tops are similar to floors in the various abuses they endure. I can't imagine going through multiple processes to paint, then seal a counter top and being completely satisfied, especially over the long term.

You can recover a formica countertop with a new veneer of laminate, right over the old surface. There are hundreds of colors and patterns (look at the Wilsonart and Formica websites) that look just like granite of all colors. The builder's supply store should be able to recommend a countertop installer who can do this. The material is not that expensive (depending on what style you choose) though the labor would be. It should still be cheaper than replacing the entire countertop with new.
As the previous answer correctly stated, paint will not adhere well to laminate and it certainly would not hold up in the long run.

I saw this done on an HGTV show about 3 weeks ago. I didn't believe it was possible, but it actually turned out quite nice. I believe they used a thin layer of something (concrete maybe? that went over the formica first, but I could be wrong.
I also think it was done on the show called "Designed to Sell".
They have forums where regulars log on and can help direct you to which archieved program to look at if you don't find it in the DIY sections. Go to hgtv.com to start.
Hope it is a fun project. Good Luck
