I have this problem too. Hasn't hurt the wood. I just make sure that every so often I use Murphy's Oil on it (ask a reputable antique dealer) to get out some of the dirt and grime and replenish the natural oils. I just follow what I was told by my g'ma and her g'ma.

Once in a while I wash my chairs down with TSP this removes grease and dirt that absorbs into the wood ,then I apply Lemon Oil to give the wood a bit of nourishment and shine and they are as good as new .
Try it it really works!

That would be the stain from the chair. What are you wiping it down with? Try wiping them with a good furniture polish that has an oil base otherwise they might dry out.

It`s just the wood stain. It`s no problem as long as your cloth is well wrung out. Some people insist on their antique furniture to be dusted this way.
