linksys support for some reason refused to help me upgrade the firmware saying that it was "not needed and that it was an apple problem" when infact i connected to the internet succesfully when i went to my neighbors house and used netgear

Yup. They all will. There really is not much of a difference between those two brands. However, you may want to stick with the one you used before so that there is less change, and therefore less work setting it up.

Just to throw another brand out there, Apple's AirPort, while expensive, is fast, reliable, very easy to use. For the extra money you are mostly just getting the ease of use though, so only go for it if you feel that is a major issue. Also remember that, though Windows computers can connect to it, a Mac is needed to edit the settings (this is the very reason it is easy to use- rather than having to set it up through your web browser, it has a nice Mac native application).

EDIT: In response to your addition info:
Ya, there is no way it is Apple's problem. Companies always like to find someone else to blame. You probably could get your old router working, but it is really not worth the effort with such an old router. It is reaching the end of it's life anyway.

There is no reason that your linksys should not work with your Mac, it is not the system because TCP/IP network protocol is the same on all networks. There may be some other problem with how your Mac is configured so I would look into that and perhaps consider a firmware upgrade to the router but that is not something you want to do if you don't know how.
I have all Linksys because they support some things that I do (VPN) and not all routers do that. I run Linux and several flavors of Windows through my router and it is both wired and wireless.
I would suggest that you talk to Linksys support or do some searching on the web for the symptoms that you are seeing. Just saying that you have problems does not make it easy to figure out. Do you know someone that is familiar with the Mac? Because that is the first place I would look if your router works for Windows.

I use a Netgear with 2 Mac's and a PC.
It doesn't matter if you use a Mac or a PC the Technology is the Same for all.
I find the Netgear to be better all around than Link-Sys or D-Link

Before you go off buying a new router why don't you look at the Linksys support site for a possible firmware to fix your current router.
I have and prefer the Linksys WRT54G wireless router myself.
