Slavery has always been going on, usually between members of tribes holding captured members of other local tribes as slaves. I don't think there is any real answer here because documents and records really wouldn't exist regarding this topic that far back in time.

Babylonians took slaves, Egyptians took slaves, pretty much every ancient civilization had slaves, and even before these major Civ's rose up in the Middle East near the Euphrates and Nile rivers, groups were taking other groups as slaves. They didn't have to be of a different race or religion, it was just tribes taking slaves from other tribes.

Asking about enslaved people, you might find this interesting. The word slave comes from Slav as in the group of people that live in modern day Poland, Russia, Slovakia, and the former Yugoslavia. The Christian in the Roman empire felt nothing wrong with enslaving people, as long as they were not Christians, and that area was still Pagan,(Poland for example, did not adopt Christianity until the year 1000) so after battles these Slavs were brought back to the empire to be their servants. Unlike in the America's where missionaries were eager to convert the natives to Christianity, in Eastern Europe they had no real interest of converting the "Barbarians"

Nice picture. History depends on written records. The earliest recorded may be the Jewish people who originally went to Egypt to escape famine conditions and wound up becoming enslaved according to the bible and Jewish tradition. They eventually broke out under Moses around the time (within a hundred years or so - dates are inexact for this period) of the Trojan War to the north ~1250 BC.
