MS-DOS (short for Microsoft Disk Operating System) is an operating system commercialized by Microsoft. It was the most commonly used member of the DOS family of operating systems and was the dominant operating system for the PC compatible platform during the 1980s. It has gradually been replaced on consumer desktop computers by various generations of the Windows operating system.
MS-DOS was originally released in 1981 and had eight major versions released before Microsoft stopped development in 2000. It was the key product in Microsoft's growth from a programming languages company to a diverse software development firm, providing the company with essential revenue and marketing resources. It also provided the platform on which early versions of Windows ran.
If you have XP or Vista you can't use it at all. You need an old version of Windows to use it. The closest you can get to it, is by opening a command prompt (Start > Run > type "cmd").

This was an operating system designed to be run from a disc.
In the early days of PC, you had on one or two floppy drives (usually 5.25 inch, although some word processors shipped with 8 inch drives).
Later Winchester drives, now known as hard drives became popular.
Once the BIOS, Basic Input Output System had loaded, this would then bootstrap to the operation system. The operating system calls routines within the BIOS to access the hardware.
I can't recall how many times I have been asked to put the disc with command.com into floppy drive A: to continue.

You got the "what is dos" answered above.
To open into it press F8 while your computer first boots.
Then options will appear. One will be to boot into Safe mode with command prompt.
This will give you a black screen with a blinking cursor.
From here, you need to know dos commands in order to do anything. To exit from here, type exit and then push enter.
