Hoarding is, in essence, keeping a whole lot of reasonably useless junk, in addition to the more useful stuff. Hoarders often lose things, and are unorganized.
Hoarders tend to horde because they feel insecure. The can't let go. Their top reasons for keeping the stuff are, 1) I might need it in the future; 2) It was given to me, i can't throw it out; 3) Oh, i'll throw it out "tomorrow", 4) It's meaningful.
Most hoarders have had a life changing event at some time which has encouraged them to believe life is not safe, so they keep everything just in case. One family of hoarders i know started collecting things after a number of close-family deaths.
It's really quite sad, and hoarding isn't a healthy activity.
Throwing things out makes room for new things to come into your life... And as you've pointed out - hoarding is unhygienic - as the hording behaviour often extends to all rooms in the house, including the refrigerator.
As for approaching the topic with her... this one is difficult... she'll probably give you one of the above listed answers and go on hording. However, you may like to mention it as "for the health of the baby" and try to coax out the real reasons why she hordes.
Once the reason behind the hoarding is released, the hoarder begins throwing things out and becoming more organized. They begin to feel safe in the world and really come into their own.
I hope this will be the case for your friend.

My dad is a horder and so is one of my best friends. To me it is a VERY annoying habit and i am glad I odn't have it. I get pleasure form throwing out clutter. It is very theraputic in many ways.
I am not sure how you can tell her, the horders I know KNow they have a problem, but are unable to fix it.

Hording is a spelling mistake.
Hoarding however I understand.
As for why people do it, mainly because they can't face letting go of anything they think they may have a need for later, or have become irrationally attached to.

ask her when she is going to baby proof her place and would she like a hand.
as for hoarding......well my husband is a bit of a pack rat but I just put it to one side and then hold it over the shredder and ask if we REALLY need this or this or this lol lol
I like my home to be clear and clean, my g. mother was a nutter of holding onto stuff and it made me feel very odd in her house, so I sort of go the other way over keeping stuff now.
regards

You can't run your friends life...it is not your resposibility. Now that you understand that...tell her your concern about the baby and offer to crawl around her house with her to see it from the child's view. Then offer to help fix it. If she says no...move on.

The religious guys are still here, but there is no one to argue with, because the atheists have all thrown in the towel.

I fail to see the connection of hoarding (over accumulation & storage of things you don't need) and a babys safety ??
