The dumbing down of American kids has been going on for quite a while now. When the curriculum changed from reading, writing, and Arithmetic to, sex education, social acceptance and political correctness our children became victims.
The lead situation is because someone thinks it's more important to line their pockets with a few extra bucks than to make sure products are safe.

I doubt it.
China is (for the most part) still technically unsophisticated and LEAD paint is cheap.
They don't care about the health of your children, only their ability to make as much profit as possible.
I believe the Chinese want to build a good reputation (even if their political ambitions are to become the mightiest nation on earth and eventually dictate to the world) but can't control their own manufacturers.
The problem is systemic.
The ONLY solution for American Corporations is to put their own quality control personnel in place at the production facilities in China and demand the quality and safety of all products, (not just toys) continually meet agreed upon standards.
I lived and worked in China. I KNOW for a fact that you can set up a business relationship and have them meet the standards, but as soon as you leave, they will IMMEDIATELY start to take bribes and cut costs. After that every item they ship is suspect. You MUST keep your own TRUSTED people on site to assure quality, and check EVERRYTHING!
Until that problem of dishonesty is remedied, never buy ANYTHING from China that can affect your health or safety.
I just saw a news article about how rubber flip-flops Walmart sells (made in China) were causing rashes on the feet of those wearing them. It is sometimes difficult to even imagine what health and safety ramifications may exist!

No,i think the Chinese ship us shoddy, often dangerous, consumer goods, because they know they can.The vast majority of everything we uses in this country, except food(and that is beginning to change)is imported, and most of those imports come from China,a Communist country that is not only ideologically opposed to American Democracy,it still maintains the overthrow of that democracy as its main goals.
It iscurrently expanding its military,in both number and capability, and has the technological ability to destroy the US's comman d and control satellite system in minutes, thereby renedering our military deaf and blind at the start of any military confrontation with them.
And this state of affairs has been brought about n=by every president since Nixon,They have all done everything they possbl;y could to empower the Chines to America's detriment.

The first answer is mostly correct.
I have grown up in an age where hard work is a thing of the past and being smart is for scientists.
Back in the day, people had to work hard to survive. They went to war for noble causes. Now, everything is handed to children and we don't really go to war for noble causes.
China doesn't have to make us any dumber...we are doing that on our own.

No. They did it to increase profits.
Why do neocons always try to twist everything into a "plot" by some foreign government? Don't they realize that most of the world admires America--its they and their bitoted and paranoid attitudes nobody likes--including the great majority of Americans.
