He was fired in early November last year, but did finish out the season as head coach.
He was fired because the teams under him were too soft - stupid penalties, collapsing in the 2nd half, etc. (His wife was battling cancer during his tenure as head coach - some people speculate that distracted him from doing his job. Understandable, of course.)
I believe he was doing some work for an NFL team this year (St Louis Rams?) - scouting, or something like that. Though I'm glad we have a new coach in Dantonio, I still wish John L good luck in his future endeavors. I didn't dislike him - just wished the team would have won more under him.

No, I do not think they should fire Smith. They should fire the assistant coaches. If you look at the U of M last year they did not do very well. They fired their assistant coaches and brought back 5 assistant coaches from their hay day. Michigan is now the second best team in the country (even if they are only ranked #7). The Spartans looked great against Notre Dame, the players just lost focus because they thought they already won (same thing happened last year with OSU and Texas).

His team last year fell apart and basically quit. They lost several games when they blew big leads. It was embarrassing and he was fired after last season. It might be tough for him to be a head coach again, at least at a Div 1 program.

Fired at the end of last season, mainly due to lack of discipline in the program and the inability to hold onto big leads and allowing the program to fall apart afterwards.
