Chances are you don't have a heater in your jar, so scratch the betta. If it's at least a half gallon, you can try a paradise fish. They're basically a cool water version of the betta; not as pretty, but still an attractive fish and easy to care for. You could keep it in a smaller container, but I personally don't recommend it. Keep in mind these fish are meateaters and need either live frozen, (i.e. brine shrimp), or freeze-dried (i.e., tubifex worms),foods.

a jar fish.

a more realistic answer would be a unhappy betta. a fish wants to live in a jar about as much as you would want to live in a jar. get a betta a nice big bowl (like 2 gallons) and he will be a lot happier.

The ONLY fish I would suggest is a betta. They don't require oxygenated water since they take air directly from the surface.

I would NOT suggest any kind of goldfish, no matter what size they are. Goldfish are one of the most dirty species of fish and are very high in ammonia. They also get very large. Sure it is possible to do, but you would have to constantly be changing the water out to prevent an ammonia spike but at the same time make sure you don't change it too much as to stress the fish and kill it. I've seen too many people try and fail. Stick with the betta.

The Siamese Fighting Fish known also as a Betta is ok with a jar life. Small goldfish are too.
