He wanted to replace the pope in England. Modern politicians will do anything for power. Why would King james be any different?

King James wished for a divorce and kindly asked the Pope for one, perhaps knowing in advance that it would be refused, and that gave him the opportunity he was looking for: getting rid of the Catholic Church in England, acquiring all their properties and riches and going for something more basic and simpler in a sort of purinatical mode. I don't think he saw himself as a Protestant Pope, just a matter of showing who was the boss in his lands. Funny how divorce is now prohibited by the same Protestant Church (see Charles and Camilla).
