You're missing the point..I said 'Musician'..I'm not seeking a messianic OK..I seek a logical counter to my apparent extremism..I have read 2 answers just agreeing..that's not I am seeking..Anyone mentioning Jimmy Fecking Page I will appear through your screens and nut you..(that's just Jeffrey Beck talking)...LOL.

JOE.."Joe's Garage 1-3" is one of my all time best.."Black Napkins" etc etc but pitch it up against "Electric Ladyland",the "Woodstock" version of THAT song and the Band of Gypsies' "Fillmore Live" double and going down to Harlem to play the days after Martin Luther King was assassinated and getting bottled but still playing till the hostile crowd was reduced to weeping solely because of the Spirit played through ONE man's depth of feeling of Unity that ALL were..Whole.Respect.

Brothers and Sisters ? If not,I don't care..cos I know.

As far as his musical ability was concerned I would have to say no. However he did employ some very unusual and innovative techniques with regards to his playing style.
It's a harder question to answer than some might think, because like many, I've always been a huge Hendrix fan.
When answering this query, many people will draw on comparisons such as, "hmm...Vladimir Horowitz, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Morse, Oscar Peterson, Harvey Mandel, Uli Roth, Franz Liszt, Miles Davis, Nicolo Paganini, Larry Coryell, Van Cliburn, Al Dimeola, Charlie Parker, Frank Zappa, Steve Howe, Eric Johnson, Liona Boyd, Dave Brubeck and a million other musicians are much more proficient on their instrument". And this is true (in my humble opinion), but several of the players I've just mentioned were hugely influenced by the man (you should know which players I am referring to, after all, you did say musician, and not guitarist).
Though I doubt that even if we could pick a so called
"Greatest musician of all time" (when referring to rock music) that he/she would not be in that position without a substantial debt to Mr. Hendrix.
But sorry, no, I don't think he's the greatest musician of all time.
I think that's an impossible question to answer (at least for me). I'm not sure what we would use as a measuring stick or gauge to calculate ones greatness in any accurate manor.

Edit - Kit Walker - To answer your question proposed to me, I'd have to say someone like Tiny Tim. He was damn good on that ukulele from what I seem to recall. He was a true genius, and left us far too soon.

Edit again - Here's an interesting thought; Whenever people compile a list of who they think is the greatest 'rock guitarist' of all time is, 99% of the people on that list came after Jimi Hendrix's time. This is because 'rock and roll' is now over 50 years old. Jimi died when 'rock and roll' was around 15 years old. Where do you think Jimi would be on that list had he of lived?

Jimi is great. I will give you that. But when we are talking about the types of musicians who coax music out of stringed instruments, I just gotta say that I think B.B. King trumps them all. Page, Rhoads, Vai, Van Halen, etc... Lots of great guitarists out there. But B.B King, is just, I don't have words for it. Let's put it this way. To me, it isn't like he's playing the guitar. It's like he and Lucille are singing a duet.

I know Rolling Stone had an issue about 5 years ago that named the top 100 of all time, and I know they put Hendrix at the top, but King does it for me.

Hmmm....i wouldn't say musician. He was one of the greatest guitarists ever to pick the thing up since Robert Johnson walked up to those crossroads BUT there have been far better MUSICIANS by the dictionary definition.

I am gonna go ahead and disagree with you and say Frank Zappa instead...that MF did everything...and better than most!

Jimi and Elvis are not even in the same category.
Jimi was an amazing guitarist and a huge influence on the rock scene.

He was a great musician.
Terrible ending.
Randy Rhodes was also a super great musician.
Had to say that, I read someone elses answer, and I totally agree.

He was great, but not the greatest. This is a very subjective question. I mean, as far as guitarist go, look at people like:

Stevie Ray Vaugh
Eric Johnson
Steve Via
Phil Keegy
Eric Clapton
Randy Rhodes

...many will disagree, but I am just as right as you.

I would agree if he hadn't died so young...he was a great guitar player but certainly not the greatest musician of all time!! He really didn't do much other than being a little ahead of his time musically!!
