Buy a KVM solution (Keyboard, Mouse Video switch)
Most PC shops sell them
Usually a hotkey set on the keyboard switched the user from 1pc to other, also use 1 keyboard and mouse, not 2

Okay, so you don't want to get a kvm, and you want to use one monitor, keyboard, and mouse:
1) Build new system
2) Create a user that is an administrator, and has a password (the account has to have a password)
3) Connect it to a switch (most cable/dsl modems have integrated switchs)
4) Record the IP address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway information, and DNS (Start, Run, type: cmd, at prompt type: ipconfig /all) (Make this static, if the icon is in the lower right hand corner of your screen, click it, then select properties, in the box in the middle, select Internet Protocol (IP) *** DO NOT clear the check mark, we just want it to turn gray. Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS information recorded). **This is being setup so that you will always know the IP address of the computer are going to connect to.
5)Righ click My Computer (either on the desktop or through the Start menu)
6) Select Properties
7) Click the Remote tab
8) Under the Remote Desktop Section, check the box next "Allow user to connect remotely to this computer
9) Add additional users, if necessary, by selecting Select Remote Users (I sugguest clicking this anyway, and making sure that it states that the account that you are logged in with has Remote Desktop Privileges)
10) Turn off computer, disconnect everything
11) Turn on computer (that you disconnected everything from)
12) Reconnect to old computer
13) Start, Run, type: mstsc (or click Start, Programs, Accessories then select Remote Desktop Connection)
14) In the Computer field, enter the IP Address recorded in Step 4, click options, go through the tabs and select the options you want to enable (one that I always enable, is under the Local Resources tab uncheck Printers, select More, and check drives and supported plug and play devices (this will allow you to share hard drives if desired))
15) click connect, enter username and password
If everything works, you will now have full control of the other computer with your monitor, keyboard, and mouse, just as if they were connected to it. To return to the other computer, you can minimize ther remote session, and monitor it as needed.
If you need further clarification and/or assistance, please feel free to email me.

A KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) switch would be the best way. You should be able to pick one up at your local office supply or electronics store.

This will help when you are watching a video while doing something else on the computer, you can view the video in full screen and you can type or play games also on full screen. for me these are the advantages of having two monitors hooked on one pc

There are switches you can buy that will feed the video from each computer to a single monitor, just one at a time.

Try this website for some options:
http://search.geeks.com/?SH=A%3dkvm%7eB%3dkvm%7eD%3d12%7eK%3d4%7eL%3d1%7eM%3d2%7e&SI=e78123a9-f3e2-4091-8ddb-1b99c75e9451&LAP=0&SRM=0&Action=2&AnswerID=2844
I'm not familar with geeks.com, but their prices look good, and it's a good place to research different brands of hardware. Keep in mind that you'll also need cables for one or more PCs that you want to attached -they're seldom included. Good luck!...
