Okay. The first thing that you need to know is that in order to add or subtract fractions, all of the fractions must have a common denominator (their denominators, the numbers on the bottom of the fractions, must all be the same).
Looking at 8 and 2 (the denominators), we realize that the way to solve this would be to make the denominator 2 an 8, logically. We need to do this to -1/2.
So, obviously you multiply the 2 in -1/2 by 4. But you also have to do that to the numerator as well, because your changing the form of the fraction, not the value. Multiplying by 4/4 is actually multiplying by one, therefore not changing the value of the fraction but changing the form of it.
-1/2 * 4/4 = -4/8 (notice that this fraction reduced is -1/2. So the actual value hasn't changed).
Now we have the problem in the form:
5/8 - 4/8.
Now that we have a common denominator, all we need to do now is find the difference of the two numerators (the numbers on the top of the fraction).
5/8 - 4/8 = 1/8
Obviously, 5-4=1. Our answer is therefore 1/8.
There you go. I'm glad I could help. :)

Answer = 1/8
1. Find a common denominator
2. Subtract
3. Simplify Final Answer if NECESSARY

You need to bring the second fraction to the same denominator. So
1/2 = 4/8
And, then you can do the operation
5/8 - 4/8 = (5-4)/8 = 1/8
