Hard to do without an attorney. If this is an equitable seperation, you could file for dissolution (both parties agreeing in all terms). Many states allow this but having a child may make it impossible to reach agreement. i had a dissolution in Florida and got the papers from Domestic Relations court, signed and filed them ($65 fee) and it was over in less than 2 weeks. Some States do not allow this in the case of a minor child being involved.

I live in Tennessee and consulted with a lawyer about getting a divorce. I paid him $50.00 for the consultation. He wanted a $2500.00 retainer fee. His advice to me was for me to separate from my wife. I couldn't afford it. I checked with another lawyer and was given the same advice. My wife and I decided to work things out because we couldn't afford for each of us to have a separate house. It was a difficult decision, but our financial situation came before our need to get away from each other.
