Should I cut it from the bottom and then just cut it in pieces?

If it's single-trunked (or just a few trunks), use loppers to remove the side branches, and then a pruning saw at the base for stems over about 1". Having a friend push the stem away from you as you're sawing will help keep the saw blade from binding and you from getting conked.

If it's many, many stems, I'd just go at it with loppers.

Are you trying to prune it to make it smaller or remove it altogether?

If removing, you need to remove the roots. Best way is to spray leaves with Round Up, wait about two weeks, spray any leaves that are still green with Round Up again. Wait two weeks, cut and remove all above ground growth. If any sprouts come up from the roots, spray them with Round Up.

Next spring the roots will be very dead and easy to dig out.
