Our Gangs are merely harmless and Prostitution isn't a problem unless you put yourself in that seat. PLus, THe chances of you getting shot randomly are slim to none. Also, let's mention that I've seen more mainstreams crimes in World Class Cities than anywhere. NYC and Chicago's gangs are something to be reckoned with. Someone from Detroit who lived in Charlotte got held at gunpoint 4 times while not once in Detroit. I guess people only care about their possessions rather than their lives.

We may not have good schools either, but so doesn't NYC or Chicago. Plus, we have some o fthe nation top schools as well like those cities.

You may ***** about the city services, but you only get what you put in and none of you aren't trying to put in to get.

Many people from other cities think we have the worst crime because it only take a few negative stories for people to create a biased opinion. Unfortunetly bad press flows a lot further than good press, and we have had a good amount of bad press.
It is just funny that people think if you spend any amount of time in Detroit then you are guaranteed to get, raped, mugged, or killed. Some people are just very ignorant.
Its too bad so many people miss out on a wonderful city because of incorrect perceptions.

We have always been a tough town - remember the Purple Gang? Union wars, riots? That image is hard to break.

Think Pittsburgh and you think steel and really bad air. In reality they haven't made steel in Pittsburgh in almost 30 years and the air is fine.

Hence, cities - like people - get reputations that are hard to break and it doesn't help when we F up we do it in a big way.

For Example:

TV crews from Japan flew into Detroit - along with tv crews from around the counrty - for Devils Night. The Japanese reported that Detroiters celebrated the devil by burning down their homes. Jeeze, its true.

Leon Spinks, heavyweight champion, is mugged on Woodward and they steal his teath and his fur coat.

Bubba Helms jumps in front of a burning police car after the 1984 World Series. Great pic.

It snows a bit during the AutoShow and the Road Crews don't remove snow from 1-94 or from around Cobo. Reporters from around the world are left wadding through knee deep snow drifts with thier camera gear. Jeeze.

One 71 year old Mayor is sued for paternity and another 36 year old Mayor is sued by the police.

All in all, we have a high crime reputation because we deserve it. Yes, it true, for the most part, no one will shoot you unless you sell them some bad crack, but all it takes is for one grandmother to be firebombed and the world thinks you're a jerk.

Throw in "tuff" guys like Kid Rock, emenem, fitty-cen, that other D-12 jerk that was killed in a bar last winter and even our celebraties are not very pleasant people.

Antoine, I know you are true fan of the D. You always call out our good points - of which there are many - but the world thinks we're jerks because many times we are jerks. The country will read the headlines about Kwame and shake their heads, they'll hear a news report some horrid crime and it will fit into our image.

Think of it this way, our Image keeps housing prices low. And when you go to another city, you always get respect when you say, "I'm from Detroit".

Detroit used to be number 1 in crime in the list that someone (can't quite remember) puts out every year. This year, though, it was St. Louis and I was so happy about that! Detroit is rough, but I like it anyway. It has a reputation of being blue-collar and it has stuck with it. I think most people hear how Detroit always tops that list and it gets embedded in their minds. A friend of mine was mugged at gun point in Detroit and pistol whipped. Fortunately they caught the guys right away.

Don't fool yourself into thinking you're pretty safe, especially when the sun goes down. But you're right, every major city has lots of crime and I wouldn't feel safe in any of them. Plus I love Detroit, it looks so beautiful and inviting when you're over in Windsor and the sports teams may not always win (oh, you Lions) but they steal your heart.

I was born and raised in Detroit. The past few years I've had to go into Detroit on business. Many industrial area's are bombed and burned out. The area near I-94 & I-75, I used to wonder if my car would still be their. Sometimes my customer would post an employee by the cars until I left. One of my co-workers had his car stolen (smashed the window and steering column) right out of a large companies parking lot.
I still don't think it's as bad as south central LA or North Hollywood , CA.
