Traditionally, we view society having five major institutitions of religion, politics, government, family, education. However, there has been a lot of recent work on institutionalization. For example, Wal Mart, McDonalds, and others get such powerful organizational inertia that their success leads to legitimization, expansion, and penetration into the very systems they exist and reach a heightened stability and responsibility in their more permenant roles. The simplest answer is that these institutions direct many if not all areas of our lives. They are essentially inescapable. Therefore, we must study and examine how they effect socialization, cultural effects, policy and traditions, and essentially how we in various ways construct our realities inside of their influence.
