You will need either a "recovery" disk set or and copy of XP and all of the drivers for your computer's motherboard and any add-on cards that you might have.

Next you will need to remove all vestiges of Vista from your machine before you install XP.

But if you take a little time and do some cleanup work, I think that you can get Vista running just fine. I have been using it since it came out and find it to be fast, secure, and very stable. In other words, I'm very happy with Vista. I now look at XP as the "old" OS.

I support close to 1000 desktop/laptop computers. About 75% XP, 25% Windows 2000. My work laptop is XP and work desktop is Vista.

At this point, Vista is about 8 months old to me and for the most part it works ok. Just OK, not fantastic, not some fly away OS that leaves a yearning to switch everything to Vista right now. Have pondered reverting desktop back to XP and been very close to switching back.

Didn't actually have that yearning with XP until after service pack 2, then I ran to XP as quickly as I could get there. Vista can actually behave like XP in the way it looks and feels. Like other older OS's, Microsoft that in to help users of older OS's adapt.

Recovery disks probably required. Order from manufacturer of your computer. Cost between 20 and 30 dollars.

To dirrectly answer your question, no. You need a recovery/install disk for the OS you want to revert to. Also, you will probably need to wipe your entire hard drive in order to revert to XP.

That said, I don't think you really want to use XP anyway. Rather, I would advise giving Ubuntu a try. Ubuntu is a free (as in speech, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software ) operating system developed by programmers all over the world. It is far ahead of Windows, and you will find it much more stable and usable.

XP and Vista share lots of the same problems (such as spyware, viri, etc).

Consider this an excellent time to recognize that
your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to
viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're
all free.

Your disk was probably formatted when you installed Vista on it so, sadly, without a XP CD, you can't. You will need a XP CD to install it.
