It depends if you want to pay or not. Basically you can get by with AVG, but I know from experience if your a heavy user you can get a virus. Trust me I know, I had to repair someones computer because they were using AVG. I use NOD32.
The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans. But if you want a free anti-virus I recommend in this order (install only one):
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It's cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
Consumer Search source will explain how NOD32 and Kaspersky are better than the best sellers (McAfee and Norton).

AVG FREE is the best I have come across in over 20 years of computing. You have been advised well to check it out. You won't look back. And dumping Nortons is a great idea anyway, whether its expiring or not.
Good luck !!

I am currently using Bullguard internet security from http://www.bullguard.com I've tried norton, AVG, mcafee, bullguard, and even kaspersky. I decided that Bullguard is the best, as it is able to detect and block intrusions and scan and delete all the virus from your computer.
There is a 2-month trial for the full version of Bullguard. You can try it, then buy it if you like it. The price is not so expensive and its definitely worth the money :)

I have been using AVG free on 10 of my computers since '03 and the paid version on my 3 servers since '06. I am very pleased. I have not had a virus since I have been using AVG.
All of my computer except 3 are older P-III 500 mhz computer. AVG is very light on the resources.
Here is a link that will assist you in removing Norton.

AVG is a good product and there is a free version available to computer users. It also doesn't require as many system resources to run when compared to NAV.
Other free antivirus products you may want to consider are:
Avast Home Antivirus (Vista Compatible)
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
AntiVir PE (Vista Compatible)
http://www.free-av.com/
( Note: Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective.

When you do go to remove Norton, it can be difficult. You may want to bookmark this webpage for the Norton Removal Tool should you have trouble uninstalling it.

Well, good old Sam Adams has it right, and in probably the right order. Pesonally, I use Avast and have for nearly 5 years, but that's just my preference. Some people find Avast hard to comprehend. AVG 7.5 is very good, and very free!

Samual's answer is very good, but remember to remover "Norton" through the windows uninstaller before you install a new anti virus program. It is never a good idea to run more then one anti virus program.
