-------------------- 40° N
-------------------- 30° N
-------------------- 20° N
-------------------- 10° N
--------------------- 0° Equator
--------------------- 10° S
--------------------- 20° S
--------------------- 30° S
--------------------- 40° S

Any place in the whole world that is found at 30°N will be equidistant to the equator of any place in the world found 30°S - as long as the numbers are exactly the same and one is °N and the other is °S then they will be equidistant to the equator. The North Pole is the same distance from the equator as the South Pole because both are 90° although one is °N and one is °S. Notice the above latitude lines are all spaced equally apart. A place at 7°S and a place at 7°N are the same distance from the equator.
The Tropic of Cancer is 23 1/2°N, the Tropic of Capricorn is 23 1/2°S. They are both 23 1/2° away from the equator so they are the same distance from the equator.

A place in United States found at 35°N and a place in Australia that is 35°S, although one is in the States and one is in Australia they are exactly the same distance from the equator. They are both 35° away from the equator, one is N and one is S.

I hope this helps you out.
