There is no US military solution to the problem. Understand that first - the leadership in the US has not learned this from conflicts around the world and simple history lessons.

Peace has to start with a political framework with all groups in Iraq - and the oil revenue must be shared. The Iraqi army needs to be reinstated... with good pay and start to develop loyalty and traditions there. No matter what sect your from; Shiite, Sunni or Kurd, Bathist etc - you can join the military and rebuild your country. This would go a long ways to get the youth off the street (out of gangs) and into a career. Get the politicians OUT of the military decisions - especially Maliki. Get infrastucture rebuilt asap in Iraq....people become disenchanted quickly with no water or power or food.

We won't clean this up - it won't be fixed until the Iraqi people decide to clean it up themselves. They are living in the 21st century, but still have 16th century attitudes about tribalism, religion, etc. As long as they keep thinking it's OK to live like this, the place will remain a mess. And if it wasn't for the oil, they would not even be a blip on the world's radar screens. Once that runs out, they'll revert back to a dusty back woods country that nobody cares about.

I think you've made a good point. I think the first thing is for Americans to understand that Bush has played on their hopes for a good ending and that they need to look at it in a more realistic way. There may be no good ending to the story, not due to failure of our troops or our resolve but due to problems we just may not be able to resolve even in twenty years. They need to make the hard decision of how far they really want to go with this. Once they've done that and set the limit, then we can get to a resolution.

this mess was no accident. bush new when it would start to go bad he would have that excuse that if we leave now it will be worse. and if anyone did not know this trouble would last for many years they were doing some good drugs during vietnam. i bet if all the oil in iraq ran dry we would leave pretty dam quick
