The domestic chicken (male= rooster, female=hen) are descended from the jungle fowl of India. They were imported into many locations around the world as food. People eat the hen's eggs and the meat of adult chickens. This benefits people by giving them good meat and eggs from a bird that is inexpensive to feed. The droppings are also used for fertilizer.
The jungle fowl from which our chickens descended looks (to my untrained eye) like the ideal hen and rooster, beautifully proportioned and colored, with black legs instead of yellow like domestic chickens. They will interbreed freely with farm chickens as well.
