I was charged with civil contempt and the judge stated I could have an attorney appointed to me. I went to the public defender and without ever asking me about the charges, stated there is a conflict of interest, they cant represent me and cant tell me what the conflict is.

additional info: Yes, the judge did say an attorney would be appointed if I could not afford one. I went to the PD and qualify economically but then they said there is a conflict and they cant help me.

Then file a written motion with the court stating the PD refused to represent you due to a conflict & asking him to appoint an attorney.

Did the judge say you have the right to an "appointed attorney," or to retain one? "Appointed" means the state will pay for it. Most states do not supply appointed counsel for civil contempt.

M0ost courts, when appointing an attorney, choose the attorney or appoint one. I have not heard of the person having to do anything like you describe. Go back and ask the judge.
