how can he say this? people laughed but the black dude didnt seem offended although it was offensive to me even though this guy didnt say that mean comment to me, but anyways, what would you have done if someone told you this and your black and the person that told you was white?

there's this rule of thumb with offensive jokes... of course, you don't want them to offend the person you're telling, but you should also be cautious as to who is around when it's said.
although is being dark a bad thing? how many girls lay out in the sun for hours trying to get dark? it seems like being pasty white is way worse of an insult...

Maybe the black guy spent the weekend on the beach and got some sun? This kind of comment, while offensive to some, is not unusual between coworkers who know each other. If this comment came from a total stranger, that would change things quite a bit.
The guy was not offended by this. Why should you be?

I think that you are being to sensitive. This hole thing with blacks and whites is to over rated. You are a person on the inside just the same. I'm sure that he didn't mean to offend you. I have a lot of black friends that have benn for 20 +years. We joke aroubd like that all the time. I'm sure that if you talked to him that he would appologize to you. Just don't be mean and pull the raceist card out. That offends the other person just as bad.

The best thing to do about this, if you're offended, is to go to the white guy who said it, and say "You know, I really didn't get the joke yesterday. Do you and that guy know each other? He didn't seem offended, did he? I'm kind of worried that he was offended. Was it some kind of inside joke between you or something?"
Or any combination of any of those...and then you'll have your answer.

you were supposed to give people compliments? durn, that sounds so weird to me...like management told the employees that they had to give each other? the customers? positive feedback? as in, would you like fries with that, and may i say your hair looks lovely today??
i think your coworker took this to be ridiculous, and so was getting foolish with it...i think you need to get over it.

they were co workers? pretty friendly with one another? could be it was a joke between friends and they were making fun of the "give a compliment" thing. now if it were someone he didn't know, i'd probably haul off on his ***.
