There really is on inexpensive way od replaceing the CV joints on a subaru. Many places just replace the axle assemblys since they have to come out anyway. You might look into that. Sometimes the extra labor involved in pulling the axles, changing the CV and putting them back is more then just replacing the axles. Many places wind up damaging the axles when replaceing the joints anyway. I personally would price both out. Axle replacement should be about 150-200 per half shaft. The cv half shaft itself runs about $90 for the part.

Subaru Cv Axle Replacement

The CV joint is simply the joint on the axle that is closest to the wheel and is not cost effective to buy a half shaft (without the inner joint or doj).
The route you go depends on the year of your vehicle. If the vehicle is a later modelyear and something you are going to keep, then go to the dealer and have them install a reman or a factory new axle (if available), if you don't plan on keeping the vehicle, then any muffler/axle shop will install one that the quality is less than the dealers and cost about $50 less. The cheaper one will cost about $100-110 and $50 to install.

sounds to me like you need to take your vehicle back to the dealer and ask for a better deal. The dealer should work with you on this. I dont know much about the Subaru myself, but you shouldnt have to have these joints constantly replaced. It doesnt sound like a fair deal to me. Go ask your dealer where you got the car from.

Remember this "You get what you pay for". I would strongly suggest you not try to skimp on this type of repair. If they are replaced by some one that has not had experience in doing this you could end up with a faulty job that can put you in great danger. Look for a garage that has mechanics who are certified in this type of repair or take it to a dealership.

If one of the joints come apart while your doing 60mph you are going to soil your shorts.

Well, if you have mechaincal abilities, it is not that difficult to do them, but you do need some specility tools (large sockets for hub nut, ball joint separator) to get them out.

If you are not mechanically inclined, then I suggest you go to a reputable shop you trust and have them replace them for you. That way it is done right with a warranty.
