I've heard loads of different answers to this question. Who chose him and why? What did he do to become the fifth Beatle?

from the web page ..

The Fifth Beatle is an informal title that various commentators in the press and entertainment industry have applied to persons who were at one point a member of The Beatles, or who had a strong association with the "Fab Four" other than John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The "Fifth Beatle" claims appeared in the press immediately upon the band's sensational rise to global fame in 1963-1964 as the most famous quartet in pop culture.

At the Beatles' 1988 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, George Harrison at one point stated that there were only two "fifth Beatles": Derek Taylor and Neil Aspinall.[1]

It seems there is no clear definition - it could be Stu Sutcliffe - buthe was really an strong influence who was wanting to concentrate on his art rather than musicbefore his tragic death - he suggested the name but was in the process of leaving the beatles.

Then there is Brian Epstein. Saga magazine interviewed George Martin as the fifth beatle - the producer of the band.

George Best has been name - not related to Pete Best.

The most definite 'fifth' beatle would be the fifth person added to the band!! Like a fifth child in a family.

I wonder whether anyone knows who the 1st beatle is/was? If someone then left the band - would they still be a beatle? We still know Paul and Ringo as beatles but they are not in the band any longer?

But for me it was Stuart Sutcliffe who died of a brain hemorrhage in Germany

The only two people I've ever heard referred to as the "fifth Beatle" were Pete Best (as mentioned above) and Stu Sutcliffe, who was the band's bassist during their VERY early years.

A lot of people have given great answers here. One of the people that I've always heard called the "fifth Beatle" was Billy Preston. He actually got a song credit for the song "Get Back" Here is a Wiki link that talks about him.

A lot of people claim Pete Best, but before that Stuart Sutcliffe was with them in Hamburg at the beginning of their gigging days. He was a close friend of John who persuaded him to play bass for them. Some even credit him with suggesting the name. He played with them for about a year.

In fact he was a very good artist too. There are exhibitions of his work being show around the world. He died in 1962.
