ok i have a little (MASSIVE) error, on startup, my laptop flashes _ on a black backround screen (on startup, the _ is white, the rest is black) and i can't type in anyting, it won't go away, it happened when i did a checkdisk. i plugged the hard drive into another computer and it said: NTLDR missing, but i tried booting/fixing/reformating, off the c.d but it dosn't work!!!!!

please someone help me!!!!!!!

I suspect that the NTLDR files are corrupted from the checkdisk that you performed.

That is a problem with part of the registry. You should be able to fix it by either reinstalling Win2000 over the top (without formatting the disk) or by install Windows XP You should be able to boot the computer with XP (or 2000) CD in the CD drive and have it do the install. You will want to run a "repair" install if you do Win 2000 or up update where you tell it not to change the files on the hard drive for an XP install.

if you're running xp put in the system disc and reboot now you want to do a repair install not a recovery it'll be the second R option this way you wont lose any of your files but you will have to re-enter any keys for any software that you purchased and all the windows updates

Your Master Boot Record is corrupted.

Ask a friend to make you an XP recovery floppy disk. Then, boot your PC with it. At the A: prompt type: fdisk /mbr

Re-boot and you should be into W2K
