Hello again Jess, You are doing a great job with your fish rescue-well done!
The fact that these friendly & intelligent creatures don't belong in bowls & actually need huge, filtered, lidded tanks is something many people find hard to accept when first hearing about it-myself included. The problem is the media projects an image of Goldy happily living in his bowl as an icon of modern living & many pet store employees tell you blatant lies about stocking levels simply to get you to part with your money so that few people question any of it.
In reality a Goldfish in a bowl is very unhappy creature whose life expectancy is measured in weeks or even days & if he doesn't die of suffocation on his own waste he'll get stunted due to insufficient growing room-little wonder then that his true potential of in excess of 20 years & over a foot in length is regarded as something exceptional when with a little research & planning it can easily be a reality for every Goldfish-such a pity & a wasted opportunity as they are wonderful pets.
I suggest you show the attached links to your parents & in addition they can ask on any of the Goldfish forums [there are hundreds!!] & the experts will tell you the same thing. I'm sure they can be persuaded. Best of luck!!

Jeff H, read what you wrote. If you want to be a clueless idiot, try to get Y!A to make a section for that...
Goldfish CAN and WILL reach 1.5+ feet in LARGE aquariums, but unless you want to get a 150 gallon tank, it will still be stunted and die young. Get the largest tank you can possibly afford/fit. 2 Goldfish in a bowl is practically murder... If you ever go to a pond, you WILL see 2 foot Goldfish that are going to be about 15-20 years old.
The myth that fish grow to the size of their environment is true. It is called stunting. Stunting is when a fish is not able to grow its full size because of lack of room. Stunting in this manor will lead to a Goldfish with a lifespan of about 2 years at the most (in a filtered tank of about 2 gallons). In a bowl, the longest you can expect a Goldfish to live is a couple months (more likely, a couple weeks). If your friend can't house the fish, and niether can you, try to find a local pond owner and ASK IF THEY WANT THE FISH. Never take a fish and dump it in a lake/pond/river/stream/creek or any other water source. That is illegal and can lead to the choking out of native species. If your dad wants to kill the two Goldfish, at least let him know what he is doing. Research "fish stunting" and let him read what is going to happen to those poor fish.

goldfish are really best in ponds -- thats where they will be happiest and mate and grow to full size and all that stuff.
but because they are so cute people keep them inside. if mom and dad won't go for the aquarium i would recommend a couple things -- like 2 BIG bowls -- one for each fish and the water needs changing out every other day. get a BIG bucket so the water can sit for a couple hours and be the same temperature as the water the fish are in. a better idea even is 3 big bowls so you can rotate when you clean -- you have a bowl ready to go and can just drop the fish in!
of course an aquarium is a LOT easier. you can clean it weekly.
you might want to consider giving them to someone who can take better care of them. i am not going to side with your parents 100% but it was your idea to get the goldfish and not theirs. when you are grown up you can have a housefull of goldfish if you want and your parents cant stop you. i used to keep little goldfish and give them to asian restaurants with big tanks after a couple months -- usually one or two teachers in any given school have aquariums and would take your fish too.

ok gold fish can live in a bowl and can live 25 years or more after that then you can start to worry about them being 2ft long they can max put on a couple of inches in a year and that is with a high protein diet and perfect conditions, usually they don't live that long anyway. just clean 1/2 the water every week and the entire thing every 2 weeks and that should be fine not saying that a tank isint much easier to maintain and that the fish wont be happier in a bigger space but a good ratio for fish size to bowl or tank size is one inch of fish per gallon. that gives room for them to grow because they will just when the time comes get them a bigger home.

Goldfish grow two feet long peoples. 20 gal. is much better than a bowl. Your goldfish will live only a few weeks in a bowl, maximum.

10 gallons would be fine if you decide not to get anymore fish. A bowl is fine for one but it isnt suggested. Goldfish are very messy fish and make a lot of waste, when there in a bowl its too small and the waste builds up and eventually kills them. A 10g would do fine with a simple filter, hood light, gravel and you would be set. This set up would be inexpensive and create a better life for your new fish.

No dilema, bowls are fine for goldfish.
ABNM - no offense, but read what you wrote... it sounds pretty dumb, doesn't it? A goldfish is not going to sprout from 2 inches to 2 feet overnight. It will last just fine in a bowl, if the bowl is kept clean and the fish is fed.

yeah a bowl is always bad for more than one goldfish they are pretty filthy fish. your best bet is to go with a standard 10 gallon tank with a filtration system and you should be fine. it does not have to bea twenty, you only have two fish.
