stopping them building nests on houses.

I don't want to interfere with the nests but they make an awful mess so want to stop them building in a certain location

Having a House Martin's nest on your house is supposed to be lucky!

Not just beautiful, they eat mosquitos and gnats. Alot of 'em.
You could build or buy some Martin houses and hang or install them nearby. No guarantees they'll choose the new ones but it's about your best shot.

It is illegale to interfear house martins, something like £1.000 per nest, I have already managed to help take one householder to court

Why? The feed almost entirely on mosquitos.
