Can anyone think of any great rock musicals? The only ones I can think of are The Wall, Rocky Horror Picture Show, all of the Beatles ones, and The Pick Of Destiny (which I believe will bring back the rock musical). Am I forgetting anything?

how about Hair, Godspell, Grease, Pippin, The Wiz, Dreamgirls, Mama Mia, Jersey Boys, Bat Boy and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

It all depends on what you consider rock, Godspell is of course had some religious overtones, but it was pop and rock inspired. Mama Mia is ABBA music, and Jersey Boys is about one specific group.

I just thought of ones that were Rock, Pop, R and B etc.

"Phantom of the Paradise" (1974) is a rock take-off on Phantom of the Opera, with Paul Williams.

"Viva Las Vegas" (1964) with Elvis and Ann-Margaret is one of his best.

"Ferry Across the Mersey" (1965) stars Gerry & The Pacemakers, as trhemselves -- a local Liverpool band competing in a battle of the bands. Also stars Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield, among other stars. Unfortunately has not yet been released on video.

"Having a Wild Weekend" aka "Catch Us if You Can" (1965) may not be great, but it's watchable. Stars The Dave Clark Five, and if you like them, that's enough. Great music. The play a band in Swingin' London who's hired to help market the new Milk Girl ad campaign. It tries to be another Hard Day's Night, but the script isn't in the same league.

"Zachariah" (1971) is a stoned western musical, written by Phil Proctor and Peter Bergman (2 of The Firesign Theatre). "A Head of his Time" is the catchline. Co-stars Country Joe & The Fish, Elvin Jones, Doug Kershaw, The James Gang (with Joe Walsh), White Lightnin', and the New York Rock Ensemble. It is definitely surreal.

"Moulin Rouge" (2001) with Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor is not your typical rock musical.

"Backbeat" (1994) is about the early Beatles when John Lennon's best friend Stu Sutcliffe was their drummer. Really good, especially when they're in Hamburg and have to do several shows a day.

"That Thing You Do" (1996) with Tom Hanks as an early '60's promoter who discovers a band during a Battle of the Bands show in Philly(?) and their subsequent rise
