Since it's raw you should prime it first to block any further absorbtion.

The finish/type of paint is your choice. Certainly there are latex and oil based Gloss paints. You might also determine that an Applliance paint will give you the highest level of gloss possible.

Beyond that, and assuming you want a smooth surface as well; you might consider spraying the piece/pieces.

If I were to do the job, and didn't already know the steps or paints; I'd probably buy a raw piece of pine 1 x 12 or whatever; 4 ft. long, prime the entire piece and test as many samples of whatever gloss and base substance you choose. Latex; Oil; Lacquer; Epoxy, in sections along that board; then judge for yourself; the results.

I would hand sand it first with 220 grit paper, wipe it down with a clean, wet towel, then primer and top coat with paint of your choice. If you just primer without sanding over raw pine, it will raise the grain and little "hairs" will stick up all over. It will be hard to sand these "hairs" down because they will be coated with primer and that will gunk up your sandpaper quick. Plus you risk pulling the hair out and tearing the wood.

Use a high quality gloss or semi-gloss paint. Paint is one of those items where you really get what you pay for. I would suggest a latex based that can be cleaned up with soap and water. Oil based requires paint thinner to clean your brushes. 2 coats should do the job. Make sure you use a high quality brush also to get a nice finish.

I think pine nuts usually come raw. Did you know? Pine nuts are called piñones in Spanish and pinoli or pignoli (locally also pinoccoli or pinocchi; Pinocchio means 'pine nut') in Italian.

D.I.Y. Doc gave a great answer. The only thing I would add is that you should use a paste filler after priming. Pine is a very porous wood. To get a glossy finish, you need to fill the pores prior to painting. Otherwise, the "holes" will not reflect the light well, and you will not acheive a high gloss.

Clean all dirt, dust and grease/oil from dresser. Then apply a coat of oil based primer with stain blocker. After this dries overnight apply oil based enamel paint. The oil based enamel has a much harder and durable finish than latex.
