I agree that it's long so that they can abbreviate it. Interesting though...a lot of words that mean "to shorten" are quite long and/or big (as in million-dollar) vocabulary words, and I'm not sure that many of them have 'official' abbreviations. Examples: Truncated, abridged, curtail, diminish, retrench, condense, summarize, synopsize, etc. I think people just like coming up with complicated ways to say simple s***.

You have actually shortened it but omitting 1 b in it. Abbreviation is the right word, isn't it? The term itself is spelled that way so it has its own sense the way it is.

Just wondering how this question got astrayed in Zoology section.
