Okay here's the breakdown: all a hub does is route traffic. It does nothing, literally NOTHING else. When you attach computers to a network you get what is called a Collision Domain. Basically all the packets running through the hub are colliding together to get out of the hub. So as a result, you have a slower network and slower connections. There is no security, no configuration, no nothing with a hub. They are useful for small networks, but in general stay away from using hubs.

With a switch each stream of packets, each connection into the switch is seperated into its own Collision Domain. Many switches also offer additional features as well.

Hubs send all packets to every connected PC, a switch only sends the packets to the PC that requested them.
